Etape Hibernia – 21st August

August 22, 2011

Note the slightly sunburned knee

7am on a drizzly Sunday morning I joined about 1400 people lined up to start the Etape Hibernia in Ennis, County Clare.  A 135 km or so loop around the Burren.

The start...

After an hour of rain the sun peaked out as we entered the Burren National Park.

Up and over the first climb

Towards Ballyvaughan

There were some nice snack stops on the way, much needed, everyone was setting a good pace.

Towards Fanore

Looking back towards Ballyvaughan

Leaving Fanore

There were lots of spectators along the way, mostly four legged ones.

Donkeys hoping no tourists go near them.

Some spectators were more enthusiastic than others.

A rare dog who doesn't like chasing cyclists

A few good spots for a dip, if I had the time

The last climb before Ennis

And finally, the finish – I arrived just after 1pm, it took just over 6 hours. Not a great time, but not bad.

Market Square, Ennis

This wasn’t quite my average speed, but near enough.

27kph-ish
